आलय, meaning "Shelter," represents a groundbreaking design initiative aimed at addressing the critical global problem of homelessness among children. With an estimated 120 million children living on the streets worldwide, urgent measures are required to provide them with a haven of safety and support. In Nepal, the numbers are equally disconcerting, with approximately 5,000 homeless children in the capital city and 4,000 outside the valley. One of the key challenges faced by existing rehabilitation centers is the lack of consideration for the impact of the built environment and the design of spaces on children's psychological well-being. As a result, many children find themselves returning to the streets. Recognizing this issue, आलय endeavors to solve this problem by adopting an innovative approach that integrates children's psychology, color psychology, and thoughtful spatial design. By prioritizing the cognitive and physical development of the children, आलय aims to create an environment that not only provides shelter but also nurtures their growth, fostering a sense of belonging and security.
To ensure a holistic approach to the rehabilitation center's design, आलय draws inspiration from color psychology and the impact of different shapes on children's cognitive development. Color psychology suggests that colors have the power to evoke emotions and influence behavior. Thus, the use of vibrant and soothing colors in various spaces of आलय can have a positive impact on the children's moods, well-being, and overall emotional development. Similarly, the careful selection of shapes in the architectural elements and interior design can stimulate the children's cognitive growth. The incorporation of curved lines, playful angles, and organic shapes can encourage exploration, creativity, and imagination.
In addition to considering color and shape psychology, आलय takes into account Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, which emphasizes that children actively construct their knowledge through interactions with the environment. The design of आलय promotes Piaget's notion by creating spaces that encourage hands-on learning, problem-solving, and exploration. By providing age-appropriate play areas, interactive learning zones, and outdoor recreational spaces, आलय fosters the children's intellectual development, encouraging them to develop their abilities and expand their knowledge in a supportive and stimulating environment.
By incorporating elements of color psychology, shape psychology, and drawing upon Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, आलय strives to create a rehabilitation center that not only offers shelter to homeless children but also nurtures their psychological, cognitive, and physical growth. This comprehensive approach aims to empower the children, providing them with the tools and opportunities to break the cycle of homelessness and build a brighter future.
